Sign language
British Sign Language (BSL) is a language in its own right, with its own grammatical structure and rules. Many members of the deaf and deaf/blind community use BSL and, with approximately 50,000 users, it is the most widely used form of signed communication. BSL may be used in a wide variety of settings e.g. civil and family courts; legal tribunals and medical assessments.
Our sign language interpreters have the technical know-how, as well as excellent social skills which are particularly important in this field.
Lip Speakers
Lip speakers are highly experienced sign experts who communicate between hearing and non-hearing people. They silently repeat what the speaker is saying, mouthing the words clearly and using facial expressions to aid this communication. We can provide Associates skilled in this work.
Usher syndrome: hearing and visual impairment
This is a genetic condition where both hearing and vision are severely impaired or totally lost. Given the varying nature of this form of disability it is essential that detailed consideration is given to the needs of individual clients before committing to a particular approach.
Deaf/relay intermediary interpreters
There are occasions when more than one interpreter is needed for effective communication. This extra person is usually an advocate, friend or family member of the person requiring assistance. Such situations commonly include: - where the recipient is not familiar with BSL and is uncomfortable with tactile sign language - where the recipient may only recently have become impaired - where the recipient has a neurological condition making it more difficult for them to communicate
Speech-to-text, Palantype and Stenograph operators
This approach involves simultaneous translation/typing of speech directly onto a computer screen, enabling the recipient to read the response personally. MTL can provide professional speech-to-text Associates able to undertake this work. |
